Avoiding Burnout

There is a concept shared in our book “The IDEAL Method” that will serve as a vital resource in avoiding burnout. It is found in Chapter 2, titled “Identify”. In that chapter we teach out how to identify the root of the problem or challenge you are facing. We also talk about how many people are quick to identify symptoms rather than root causes. In doing so, they often find themselves focusing all their time and attention on addressing the symptoms and never really fixing the real problem.

Burnout is not a one-size fits all kind of issue. Depending on the individual, the situation, and the circumstances surrounding the situation, it can look very different. A quick Google search on burnout will provide you with extensive lists on the symptoms of burnout, but not so much on how to avoid it. If you feel as if you are in the midst of burnout, those lists will prove invaluable to provide you with confirmation. However, if you want to avoid burnout and being another statistic, we would love to connect with you.

Having said that, if you are struggling with burnout, we can help with that too. Terry went through a season of burnout that lasted for several years. He understands the reality of the dark night of the soul and what it takes to get back on the right track. We understand that many of those in ministry recognize when something is just not right, they often do not know what to do about it. We can help with that and would love to partner with you to help you experience passion and purpose in ministry again.

Our primary goal in being your resource for this topic is to give you the tools to avoid burnout before you ever start down that path. There are things you can do right now to protect yourself, your family, and your ministry from this all too common problem among those in leadership roles.  Understanding your strengths and weaknesses will empower you to build the necessary guardrails to avoid burnout and become a resource for others in their ministry journey as well.

Finding Your Way

The joys and heartbreaks in leadership are real. The highs can be through the roof and lows can take us through the depths of extreme despair. Those in ministry experience these extremes countless times throughout a typical week. In the midst of serving, loving, teaching, engaging, dreaming, etc., many leaders lose their way. That does not mean they do not know where they are, they just are not sure where they should be. Keeping a balanced perspective for the ministry you lead and for those who are following you can be challenging and if you are not careful, you wake up one day and realize you have lost way.

Rediscovering your true calling and embracing that calling could be the single most important thing you can do as a leader. The weightiness of leading people and realizing the impact you have in their lives can be overwhelming and exhilarating at the same time. As you follow your daily routine it becomes easier and easier to serve the people of God without actually serving God.

If ministry has become a monster that consumes all your time, energy, and passion, you may have lost your way. We are constantly developing new resources to help leaders gain perspective on where they are now, where they are headed, and how to create a ministry road map to find their way home again.

Board Development

We have developed a unique way of looking at the organization being served and create a customized plan to attract the right people to board leadership. Imagine creating an organization where every board member understands his/her place and knows from day one exactly what they are supposed to be doing. By digging deep into the organization, we create the perfect plan for advancing the cause by attracting the right people to key leadership positions from the beginning. Our desire here is to create a platform that attracts the right talent to your board, holds them there until their allotted time has been served, and then naturally creates a pool of people who are anxiously awaiting their opportunity to serve.

In addition, we help board members understand their role and begin having a major impact the moment they start to serve. The men and women who serve on boards often do so because they are attracted to the cause of the organization. Understanding that they want to make a difference, we give them the tools to make that a reality. This tool will not only transform your board leadership team, it will enhance your ability to have a lasting impact regardless of your cause.

Management 101

Have you ever wondered how to develop a values list, mission statement, or vision statement? Do you understand the ins and outs of developing job descriptions, finding the best employees, vetting those potential employees, and making a job offer to the next key person on your staff? Do you have an employee manual and understand how to use it to strengthen your organization?

We have discovered that while many Christian leaders feel called, many of them struggle when it comes to the nuts and bolts of directing their affairs in a business-like manner.

Things like employee annual evaluations, establishing office protocols, conducting interviews, establishing an annual budget, recruiting, and maintaining an active volunteer training program are all part of a healthy organization. Creating strategic plans that work, casting vision, and creating a dynamic work environment where leaders actually lead and employees actually grow in their skills and abilities is not something that just happens, it takes time, effort, and planning.

Things like creating a Board meeting agenda, developing Board profiles, and having authentic, meaningful discussions are something we might desire, but unless we are able to put those pieces in place, they will never happen. Perhaps you understand the value of coaching your employees and volunteers but are not sure where to begin. We want to help.
